Hi, all! It's been a while since I could share with you because my computer was not working. Now, thanks to a birthday gift from my dad (Thanks, DAD!) I'm back and happy to be. A couple of weeks ago my doggie, Gracie and I went on a fun little trip down highway 49 to visit a special shop in Amador City, California called The Victorian Closet. My Birthday!!!

Okay, I know that most of us enjoy our birthdays. But, I gotta tell you this one was super special for me! To start off with, my sweetie got me a new car stereo and speakers as part of my combined Christmas and Birthday present. That goes in on Monday at 10 am, I'm so excited!!! Then, I woke up to this super darling cake this morning!

My mom hand knitted a sweater and socks for me. These are my first hand-made socks. They are absolutely yummy on the feet!

To top it off, Rachel brought me big European chocolate and my buddy Carly Lemke took me out for a walk and treat at Santoro Coffee Shop.

See... pretty cool birthday!! I wish everyone could have as wonderful a birthday as I have!

Native American Grinding Stones or Rocks

Living in El Dorado County in Northern California, most of the history we're treated to is about the California Gold Rush. But, I'm enchanted by the evidence we have around us which tells the story of people who were here long before 1848, the Miwok Indians. Recently, while on a little hike in some woods near my home, I found these beautiful large grinding rocks. The women of the tribe would spend time hanging out with their friends and grinding acorns into a fine paste that they made into food. It was quite a trick because acorns are naturally bitter. But, they are really abundant, so native peoples made due with what was on hand.

I hope you enjoy the photos I took. The hollowed out "bowls" are full of water this time of year and I think they make for a beautiful picture. Enjoy!

After being invited to be on a local television show in Mount Shasta, it was suggested to me that I create an on-line class for people who are interested in learning more about Walk in Your Own Footsteps. So, despite the fact that I don't know anything about making a video, I'm jumping in and learning the new skill! I created this piece of art to be part of the intro. My camera is due to come in on Friday, I'll let you know how it all goes. Life is so exciting! Full of twists and turns. :)

I just love this mannequin I purchased last spring in the darling town of Diamond Springs, CA. She's been waiting for me to get my studio tidy enough to really appreciate her and now I'm ready to play dress-up with her. Today, I took off her Holiday attire in favor of something soft and sparkly. The tiara and crystal necklace look so pretty against the silky sparkly scarf I found at Empress on Main Street in Placerville. I tried it with and without the antique shoes. They're so cute, I included a picture, but I think I'll leave them off till I re-do her for Easter.

She still doesn't have a name.... Just haven't come up with the right one, yet. :)

An Ode to Coffee

First thing every morning, I think about coffee. I've been that way for as long as I can remember. My first memory of coffee was of my grandmother talking about going across the street and to have coffee and "visit" (code for gossip) with the neighbor that had this great window that looked out into the street and of everyone's business. My grandmother lived in a neighborhood in Long Beach, CA that was always being annexed. It started out Long Beach, and was briefly Wilmington, Carson, Los Angeles, and finally returned to having a Long Beach mailing address. It was called the "Presidential Estates" which is really funny because they were all tiny bungalows, mostly no more than 1,000 square feet. Every day, just after breakfast, grandma would anounce that she was headed over to the Boone's for coffee. Strange, because she'd already drank a pot, but there she'd go...

At her house, I always wanted to try coffee. It smelled so good! She seemed to love it. I just had to give it a try. So, she filled this teeny tiny little cup with a drop of coffee, a teaspoon of sugar, and some milk. It tasted like coffee flavored candy! So sweet and yummy. I sipped at my little china cup and soon it was gone. As time progressed, I graduated to larger cups and a stronger mix, but my favorite way to drink coffee is still with sweetener and milk.

Working in hospitals through my teens cemented my addiction to java. I loved how we flouted convention and treated day no different from night. Coffee was a big part of that! If you're going to go to school in the day and then work all night, you gotta have your coffee.

When I was just 20 years old, I joined a fellowship which helps people who want to quit drinking alcohol. Let me tell you, that group loved it's coffee! I remember getting a cup at my first meeting over 25 years ago. I remember how the hot coffee sounded when it came in contact with the Styrofoam cup. I remember how my hand shook a little. I was reassured by an old-timer that the shaking would stop; and it did. To this day, I love to go to meetings and listen for the sound of hot coffee on Styrofoam, I find it comforting.

During my 30's I was introduced to Starbucks and fancy coffee drinks. I must admit I fell in love with the fat-free, sugar-free, vanilla latte! For Christmas that year I got an espresso machine. It didn't taste quite as good as the ones at the coffee shop, but it was wonderful to have it whenever I wanted and not pay a fortune for it. When my espresso machine finally died, I didn't replace it, though...

I guess, for me, what I love about coffee is the ritual of it. Setting up the coffee maker, waiting for it to brew, stealing a cup if I can't wait till it's all the way done. Although I've had some wonderful coffee in pretty fabulous places, there is just no coffee that compares to the first cup in the morning in my own kitchen.

The third Chakra Tree is complete!

Following a very busy and overwhelming December, I've finished the third painting in my Chakra Tree series. I was planning to do three paintings however, my daughter looked at all three together and asked, "Are you going to do Fall next?" The funny thing is I just painted each painting independently and didn't notice that they certainly do look like winter, spring, and summer. I haven't decided if there's a fall to be created. I was just enjoying have the three complete. :)

Life and other stuff

It sure has been a while since I had something fun to share here. My former husband of 20 years (Joe) was diagnosed with cancer in October and life has been pretty crazy ever since. I think we all must live with a belief that those who are close to us will continue to be there. If we focus on how much our friends and family mean to us, and how fragile we really are, I think we'd live in a state of fear. So, we go along confident that those we love will be there for a long time. Having Joe become suddenly and seriously ill, has been earth shaking for me and my whole family. I've been working hard at helping my children feel secure, and my business when I can. But, I openly admit, the kids come first. :)

As for art... I'm developing work in my imagination which I look forward to bringing into real life. When my mind drifts to scary thoughts when I'm going to sleep, I use my imagination to create beautiful pictures. It's fun, life affirming, and gives me ideas of images to create when I actually get to paint again. Following Thanksgiving, I'll be working on a new ornament for Christmas. A gallery that has invited me to do an art showing in April has asked me to participate in a Christmas ornament fund raiser and I'm ready for a new fun assignment. I'm planning to paint a special dove and then embellish printed copies to press between glass. Then I'll use the same method I use for the pendants to make an ornament. I can't wait to see them in real life! I'll post pictures when I get the first done.

One day at a time

Life has been more crazy than usual here at my house. My sweet ex-husband is sick with cancer and my sons are now with me full time. When he was healthy, their dad had them from Friday to Friday and we traded off. So, I was a 50/50 mom. Having them here all the time is a blessing, but it makes getting work done pretty tough. I can't imagine how single moms who work out of the home have time to get any thing done at home. Today Joe starts chemo, so we are praying that he'll be back up here in Northern Cali to enjoy his boys very soon!

As far as the art business goes, I've created a few new pendants from the art I've been painting. I have an opportunity to do an art walk (FOR FREE!!!) on Saturday and I'm looking forward to getting feedback from folks on the new stuff. I really love them and it's always interesting to see what other people love. I've been surprised by what gets people excited. Here's the original painting that I took the images from:

The second dove is from another painting in the same series. It's always interesting to see what other people see in our art work. I believe that the imperfections in art leave space for the observer to insert themselves and interpret from a personal place. While I admire artists who can recreate the world so perfectly that it looks like a photograph, I also appreciate a folksy style that leave lots of room for the observer to interpret.

A new series of paintings

I just love it when I wake up in the morning with fully formed creative ideas on my mind. Last week I had just such a morning. I had just bought a whole bunch of canvases at Aaron Brothers because they were 70% off! Some of the canvases were a size I've never used before, 12x30. I didn't know how I would use them until I dreamed up this chakra tree idea. Since I love symbolism, I thought this would be super cool, if I could pull it off. My goal is to a three painting series (at least!)

In case you're not familiar with chakras, according to Wikipedia: Chakra is a concept originating in Hindu texts, featured in tantric and yogic traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism. They include seven colors, starting with red at the base of your spine (root), orange for the sacral (reproduction, creativity), Yellow for solar plexus (gut), green (sometimes pink) for the hear (compassion, love), light blue for the throat (speak your truth), dark blue for the third eye (intuition), and white or purple for the crown (enlightenment).

I used these symbols and the tree to represent the human body. The first one I did in a primitive style.The second painting is in a bolder more whimsical style. I love them both and can't wait to work on the third.

My creative process

Today I've been thinking a lot about my creative process. I guess it's different for other people, but for me it is a wild ride. First an idea starts small in my mind. I visualize the project coming together and very often switch it around many times in my imagination. I thoroughly enjoy this process as it gives me a chance to make the project over many times without using any resources other than my time. I can change everything about the project, the colors, scale, etc. Finally, when I'm ready to commit my idea to canvas, start the quilt, begin to sculpt, or write it down, (depending on the kind of idea I'm noodling) I love the beginning. I'm thrilled as my vision begins to take shape...

Then, almost always at the half way point, I HATE it! It's wrong, what was I thinking? Since this always happens, I push past the middle point and begin to fall in love again. Once it's finished, (in the case of a painting) I sign it and put it up on the mantle. When I pass it, I have mixed feelings of love and displeasure as I see what I think are imperfections. Within a couple of days, the imperfections become my favorite parts and I no longer want to part with the project at all! :)

Jim and I went to visit Sunshine, the owner of the gallery in Pacific Grove that carries my art, Butterfly and Lantern. Since I've been invited to show my work at J27, we motored over to the coast to get a few of my pieces so I'll have plenty to show. Here's a picture of me at the gallery with Sunshine.

While I was admiring Dick Crispo's work, I noticed this cute little birdie pair in a nest that I created! How fun! Now I've been shown with Dick Crispo! I'm really moving up in the world. :)

Two galleries have invited me to show my art!

Can you believe it! On Thursday, I received two requests for my art! As I type this, I'm in denial... My artwork is wanted... I'm so excited!

So, just to let you know, this didn't happen all at once. One gallery (Heart & Soul - more info at http://www.facebook.com/HeartnSoulStore) is also a shop which sells my book, cd's, and pendants. The owner, Carly, has been working on her gallery for some time. I wasn't sure that my work was what she envisioned for her shop, so I didn't really say any more than, "If you'd like to see my work, to see if it fits in, let me know and I'll bring a few pieces by." Well, she went to my website (www.LauraPallatin.com) and checked my work out herself and decided that my work is what she wants! Woo-hoo!!!

The other gallery, in downtown Sacramento called J27 (www.j27gallery.com) was recommended to me by another gallery I am in called Trezhurs in the Land Park section of Sacramento. I submitted some images of my work and was invited to do a showing on a Friday, September 16th!

I guess that this success feels sudden, but really it's the result of working on my business. Every day I get up excited and happy because I get to work on products that help people feel good. Be it art, pendants, books, cd's, cards... they all go together to help people live happier lives.

EnVision Cards

Getting Ready

I feel that I'm in a "getting ready" phase right now. I have so many wonderful things coming up, my head is swimming. On Friday the 5th, Jim and I will be attending the grand opening for an art gallery which features my work in Pacific Grove. Sunshine, the owner of "The Lantern and Butterfly" is such a wonderful lady! I'm so excited about seeing her and celebrating her special day. (now to figure out what to wear!!) I wish I knew Robin Brown of Magnolia Pearl personally, I know she could help me pick out the perfect outfit.

At the end of the month, August 27th, I'll be teaching a class I'm really excited about, too. I'll be helping people create their own personal inspirational art cards. I am pleased that it will be a fun class that will uplift and inspire each participant. And, everyone will walk away with little works of art that inspire and support their life's path.

Then, when Jim's knee is all better, we'll be heading up the coast through Oregon and maybe all the way to Washington. We're going to wander up the coast as the spirit takes us. I'm really looking forward to the adventure.

But, before then, the boys will go back to school… Rachel will be coming home... Jamie’s working her fanny off and will be back in school soon… The work and family blend into a wonderful life.

First steps in the Art Truck "Belle Mariposa"

I've been working on creating an "Art Truck" in my mind for months! I love to visualize my creative ideas and, when they're solid in my mind, drawing them out on my sketch pad. So, I've been playing with this idea for quite a while. In earnest over the last few months but, in truth, I've loved the idea for years!

At first I started visualizing a car, then a vw bug. When I started bringing art to galleries and doing street fairs, I was led to the idea of an art truck. I'll have a shell to put over the bed so that I can put my art back there and not worry about it blowing around. I also want a tiny backseat for my dog, Gracie! She loves to come along wherever I go!

If you take a look at my art, you'll see that I love painting butterflies. My first one was at the suggestions of my son, David. We were doing a mural on the side of our shed and I found a picture of a purple cone flower that happened to have a lovely monarch visiting it. When we finished the flower, David reminded me that it was time to add the butterfly. I told him I didn't think I knew how to paint a butterfly, but I'd try. Well, it was pure magic. The giant image just flowed and I dearly love that first butterfly and see it almost daily when I look at the artistically painted shed in our yard.

Since I'm probably a ways away from being able to buy my truck :(, I thought I'd start practicing painting on cars with bits of car that I can get from wrecking yards. So far I've gotten a piece of bumper which I've hand painted a couple of butterflies on. I used acrylic paint and brushes to do these two. I'm going to try creating a stencil and using my airbrush to do the background and adding the details with brushes.

Finally, I have a friend who is an auto body guy. He'll clear coat the whole truck and protect the images as well as the original paint.

If you've created an art vehicle, I'd love to hear from you and learn what you found worked and what didn't. I'll continue to share my experience and, hopefully, will have a finished truck to show you!

Two new monarchs

I've always loved butterflies. There's the brighter than life colors, the fact that they FLY, transformation symbolism... The cover of my book, Walk in Your Own Footsteps is a photo of the trail that ends in a butterfly sanctuary in Santa Cruz, CA. There are really a lot of reasons that I love butterflies. About 2 years ago I painted my first one. I fell in love all over again. Each one is like a snowflake, it looks just like the others, but not quite. Today, I finished two more paintings. I have so many ideas for butterflies fluttering around my head, it looks like I will be painting many, many more. So, here's what I finished today.

I will be printing out tiny versions and creating pendants with them. Gosh, what a lovely way to spend my time. It surprises me that my heart, soul, and imagination can be so excited and my body gets so tired that I can't create. I'm never out of ideas or inspiration. I hope you enjoy these, too.

While on a little vacation to celebrate our anniversary, Jim and I happened upon the most wonderful gallery in Pacific Grove, CA. We were lucky enough to meet the owner of the gallery and I told her about my artwork. The owner, Sunshine, invited me to bring in my work for consideration in her shop. Well, I'm excited to share that she included everything I brought in.

The town of Pacific Grove is tucked in with Monterey and Carmel and is a quaint romantic getaway known for it's Monarch Butterfly migration. Well, if you've looked at my work, you know that I love to paint monarchs. Here's a couple of the paintings that are in the gallery.

The philosophy of Cowgirl Gypsy Queen is all about AND! Dress up as a Cowgirl, Gypsy, or Princess? Yes! Boots or a tiara, why choose?

Living life with this philosophy opens me up to all sorts of exciting adventures. Very few of us define ourselves with just one aspect. Still, we naturally choose an answer to "What do you do?" And, we feel the need to have an answer for ourselves to the question, "Who are we?" What if we throw the doors and windows open and just refuse to choose? Refuse to stuff ourselves into the round hole, or the square one? Let go of the idea of limits. It's fun!

I'm a homebody that loves to travel, a serious person who loves to laugh till my tummy hurts, I like cats and dogs, babies and teenagers. I'm a walking contradiction and I like it that way! Some people feel that, when it comes to art, you should choose a medium and focus on that. Well... I know that I would have much less fun if I had to pick just one thing. So far, my creative pursuits include writing, painting, sewing, quilting, beading, making stained glass, gardening, creating soft sculptures and photography. I may be forgetting something because sometimes I do. I'm interested in learning new things, too. Needle felting has me very intrigued.

This explains why the last time I posted I showed the Kindle/ereader pouches I made. Today, I'm posting pictures of pendants that I made from my original art work and a darling picture form a vintage children's book. I made these to take with me to the McCloud flea market and I'll be posting some on ETSY when I get back.

I hope that you embrace your inner Cowgirl Gypsy Queen and, the next time you feel you should choose between two wonderful things, DON'T CHOOSE! Say, "Yes!" I'll take both, thank you!

My very first outing with my Cowgirl Gypsy Queen line is next Sunday, June 5th. I'm so excited and I've been making things and having so much fun! Here's a few Kindle pouches I've finished. I've been letting my creative muse be my guide, creating exactly what I feel like and playing with all these fun trims, bead, buttons... etc. What a joyous time. I hope that everyone who takes one of my creations home can feel a little of that joy in the piece.

This Darling pouch is made from a vintage quilt I found. The pouch is embellished with a felt rose I handmade and a lacey doily.

This pouch is made from upholstery fabric.

I made this pouch to keep my mom's Kindle safe in style. It features handmade felt roses and grapes that were liberated from handmade doilies. I also added beads for a little sparkle.

I'm so excited that a beautiful store in the Land Park area of Sacramento called Trezhers is going to host my first Art Class in June. Because I want these classes to be a special experience for all my participants, I'm going to be putting on a show and inviting the students to play along with me.

I'll be handing the class over to my alter ego The Cowgirl Gypsy Queen and encouraging everyone to let their own inner child out to play. If you'd like to learn more about the Gypsy Queen, check out my new website at www.CowgirlGypsyQueen.com.

In class, we'll be making inspirational and fun artists trading cards (ATC) Here's a sample of a few I made. These tiny mixed media works of art are so fun because they are not overwhelming to complete yet allow each artist to express themselves!

More birdies for my ETSY site

I've been working on birdies to add to my ETSY site. I just love the little darlings! It all started when my sweetie and I were planning to get married. I went looking for the perfect wedding toppers for me and, while I liked a lot that I saw, none were exactly what was in my head. So... I tried making my own. My first few attempts were still close but no cigar, then I came up with a couple I dearly love! They are the birdies pictured at the top of my blog. While they are perfect for me, I must admit that they are a little small. So, I think I've come up with the perfect wedding couple.

Taking pictures is always a challenge. I especially like this one because it looks like the birds are looking at the penny.

I also sculpted and painted a whimsical little purple couple for fun. They are pictured here to give you an idea of contrast in size between the slightly larger green couple.

For the rest of the week, I'll be working on my pretty pouches which I plan to submit to Somerset by this weekend.

a BIG sign for my book signings

I thought it would be a good idea to make at least one BIG sign that could be seen across a fair or other large venue so I painted this one. It was really fun to work in a large scale. Wouldn't it be an absolute blast to be able to paint a HUGE something on the side of a barn! Ah, a girl can dream. Until then, 3 feet by 5 feet will have to do. :)

Kindle Pouch

I just love the Kindle I got for my birthday this month. When I shopped for covers, however, I found that most cost more than third the cost of the unit! And, since I've been inspired by Magnolia Pearl for a while, I decided to make my own! Using scraps I made this pretty bag and an extra little sack to keep the charger in. I just love having everything in one place!

I used fabric that was a sample from an upholstery shop. The green trim is left over from a quilt, and the hand-made lace doily I picked up at a thrift shop. I used seam binding tape fused to itself for the closure and the button is from my stash.

Here's a view of the back showing the doily. I used free-handed quilting to applique the doily. There may be a better way, but I didn't want to use glue.

Finally, the Kindle and charging cable tucked in their safe cozy home. I made the extra little fabric bag to keep the screen safe from the prongs on the charger. I think this is a much more fun and creative solution to keeping my Kindle safe from harm. :)

Sandwich boards to promote the book

I've just finished these panels to use to promote my book. I took a couple of days to think it through, then my sweetie cut the wood on Sunday and tah dah!!!! They're done. Jim will put the legs on and I'll be able to take it with me when I do book signings and such. I'm pleased with how they came out. Here's the two together....

I've been having so much fun lately creating these little cupcake pin cushions. I've collected the bases over time. Some are molds, others are vintage measuring cups. Working up the design and getting it out of my head and into reality has been fun! I especially like the way the beads look like sprinkles.

Hey, all! I've been slaving away working on new designs to place in pendants that I plan to list on ETSY. I thought it would be fun to post a few of the art pieces here to give a preview of the jewelry to come. I just love creating iconic images. These pieces lend themselves perfectly to darling little pendants worn simply or adorned with charms and beads. Gosh, the creative process is fun!This process starts with creating original artwork, taking pictures, and collecting vintage images. Then, I use my computer to make them the right size and print them out. For fun, I like to add some glitter and extra brush or ink strokes to the images. Finally, it's off to the glass studio to create the pendants. I hope you are having fun with your process, too.

When I was decorating our guest bedroom, pouring over magazines for the perfect combination of elements, I fell in love with an antique blue cupboard. The piece in the magazine was had been made from old stairs and painted many times over the years. Despite the fact that the original is a one of a kind, and way out of my budget anyway, I was dreaming of bringing such a piece into my home. So... I asked my sweetie if he could make a cabinet for me that we could turn into a similar piece. He was game so we worked on the project together. We live in a development with pretty small bedrooms, so I asked Jim to make it shallow so that it wouldn't take up too much room. He did the carpentry, and I did the painting and lined the inside with a 40's inspired fabric. I thought it would be a fun thing to share here. Art takes many forms and this little cabinet is art in my book.

Woo hoo! I just suggested a show to the Discovery Network. I hope it comes to life. I know many of us creative types would love it! Here's my idea:

Hi! I have an idea for a show I'd love to see. As far as I can find there is nothing like it on the air now. I'm not sure which one of your channels would fit best, but I'm sure you guys are the right place for it. My idea springs from what I love which is creating. I make quilts, paint, sew, make jewelry, stained glass, write, etc. I know that many people are like me and there is nothing on TV that shows people explaining their creative process. If we are open to many forms of creativity, we can include profiles of glass blowers, architects, artists, sculptors, artisans, musicians, writers... and many more. It would include elements from some your most popular shows including "How it's made" and even "Dirty Jobs" because we'd be interviewing people about what they do (even better, what they're passionate about) Obviously, I'd love to be a part of the show :) But, seeing it come to fruition would be a real blessing, too. My first birdie ornament

I've been working on this design in my head for a few weeks now and it is finally in the real world! Oh, I just love it! Soooo.... cute. I've been playing with exactly how to sculpt, paint, and finally what to use for the hanging loop. I wasn't sure what to put on the bottom, but I really like to little organza pouf of a tassel.

New Year, New Projects... so excited!!!

As each new year approaches, I feel invigorated and excited about the "starting over" that New Year's Day brings. This year I plan to launch an ETSY site and do some craft shows. I love making art and sharing it with others. When I made my first birdies, I made them because they got in my head and I wanted to see them in real life. Then a neighbor fell in love with them, too and I've been making them to order for her and her bird-loving family. So, I plan to offer some on ETSY. I think that doing craft shows allows us to talk with people and get real feedback from people about our work. The combination seems like a good idea (we'll see how it pans out in real life!)

I also do work with stained glass, painting, fabric... Someone once told me I have ART ADD. That may be, but I prefer to see myself as someone who has many interests and likes to explore them all!

Something I've been playing with is the idea of putting a hole through a birdie and running a ribbon through it's body so that it can be an ornament. Here's the first one I'm gonna try before I've painted it.

You can tell by the size of it in my hand that it's pretty tiny. I love the super little ones, this one is sort of medium sized. I can't wait to see how it looks finished. Maybe I'll even give her a tiny nest.

The creative process pulls me along and keeps my sunny side up. I can't imagine living without it.

I'd like to wish all who visit today a wonderful holiday. Mine has been so fun! All our kids were here (plus one!)
for presents this morning. I'm pretty sure everyone got what they were hoping for along with a few surprises!

As for me, I've been longing for a little ipod to replace one that left my life last summer. :( Jim fooled me by sticking the darn thing in an old shoe of his and putting that in a box before wrapping the whole mess! I was certainly surprised! How fun! We enjoy taking trips and my iphone is always searching for a connection when we're in the country, so an ipod works much better. I'm loading it up already.

I'm so excited to be planning my art projects for 2011. I plan to focus on birdies and make some for craft shows and etsy. Also, I've got a quilt or two to make... Yippeeee!!! Ain't life grand?

I know it's been a while... but here I am! I had a wonderful book signing. It couldn't have been a more wonderful day! So many dear friends stopped by to show their support. My darling, Jim made yummy snacks for everyone... It was really special. Even the weather knew it was an important day for me and took a break from the rain we'd had for days. I hope that you may find yourself in such a love-storm some day. I'm so greatful.

Planning for a successful book signing

I've been doing so much research on book signings that my mind is buzzing.

I got a table, made the cloth, found a cute wooden bowl for candy; made up business cards and fliers. I even bought an instant camera to make a special bookmark for people who buy the book at the signings!

The to-do list includes getting a poster made up for the table and a new outfit! Gotta love an excuse to buy a new outfit! :)

If you know anything I don't about successful book signings and wanna make suggestions, I'm all ears!

The big box of books I ordered for the book signings arrived today! The cover Joe (my ex-hubby) made for the book is just beautiful!

I'm enjoying the creative processes that is going into promoting the book. I made a table cloth yesterday for the table I'll take to book signings. Also, there are so many promotional materials to pull together!

I am so excited about helping people change their lives for the better. That's what the book is all about, making positive life changes. What an honor it is to be a part of such a wonderful transition!

Today was a super great day! Wow, what a week for me! I just checked lulu.com and found that my books have shipped and are due to arrive on November 22nd. In plenty of time for the book signing at Caffe Santoro! Also, I delivered the set of Goldfinch birdies that my neighbor commissioned and she ordered two more sets!

Ah, an excuse to make more art, what more could a girl ask for?

Wow! I started the day at the DMV to get my motorcycle license (a life-long dream realized!) Then off to a client's to deliver a commissioned art piece. I have a client scheduled for massage at one office at 2, then an evening at Massage Envy. Christmas is coming and the kids will be toooo sad if there are no presents.

Also, promoting the book signing and everything else!!

My life is great and busy and wonderful!

I fell in love with the first set of goldfinches that I made for my neighbor, so I had to make a set for myself! The male is the bright yellow color and the female is a more brown. I chose the colors they display in Spring because they are more vibrant than any other time of the year. Each little couple also has a tiny clutch of eggs in their nest.

I can now say that I'm completely finished with all the writing, editing, etc! All that's left is marketing! hee hee As if that's the end! Im so proud of myself to have completed the book. The tedious side of the creative process

Most of the creative process is so fun! The thrill of a new idea… the process of giving birth to a wonderful creation… the joy and satisfaction of sharing your new creating with the world! The task I’m completing today is not so glamorous, however. Today I am reading my book for the kabillionth time looking for anything that’s not perfect. The good news is that I still really love the book. I’m proud of every word and look forward to sharing it when it is printed. It’s just attention intensive to sit and read (mostly aloud) and consider whether or not I should add a comma or change a word to slightly shade the meaning…

Is this my first book or only book? Only time will tell. I felt called to write this one. For now, I don’t have plans to write another, but I didn’t plan to write this one, either.

Tomorrow I will upload the finished project to lulu.com and order a bunch of books so that I can have a big party to celebrate the completion of the book. But, today I will be spent doing a tedious, yet necessary job.

Woo-hoo! It's here! My first copy of my book! There's plenty of little changes to make and once they're done (hopefully next week) I will be ordering some copies to sell.

As a creative endeavor, this is a long drawn out one. There are so many ways to create. Writing a book, for me, has been a long and evolving process. It's definitely worth the journey!

Hand sculpted birdies before being painted

When I finished the last set of birdies, I thought they needed a proper home. Living in a Western Sierra Foothill suburb, I am blessed to still have little pockets of forest left alone by the developers. Trug in hand I headed down to the woods to collect natural materials to create a nest. I was in my own little world, mentally putting together the nests, when a neighbor called to me from her gardening and asked me what I was planning to collect in the woods. Once I explained the project, my neighbor asked me to bring it by when I was finished. Also a bird lover, my neighbor asked me to make her a set of birdies that are finches. Here's a look at the finches, sculpted but not painted.

Wow! After about nine years of writing (on and off) I can finally say, "I've written a book" instead of "I'm writing a book." Doesn't sound like a big distiction, but you'd be suprised how much different it feels. Now, whatever I may do with the rest of my life, I will have accomplished this one thing.

I was motivated by the hope that this book will bring comfort and help uplift people who are struggling to put their lives together. This continues to be my deapest hope.

I've completed all the edits and converted the .doc file to a pdf using lulu.com's system. Everything is ready accept... The cover. I made one but it won't work because the resolution is too low. Enter my ex-hubby and knight in shining armor! He's gonna re-do the whole thing for me and make it work. I can't wait to hold a copy in my hand! I'm not sure how long it's supposed to take, hopefully not too long!

Anyway, here's a pic of the cover that I made. It looks funny because it will wrap around the book, so the back is in the front. I hope all your creative projects are flowing nicely for you.

Jim and I have been working on our little camper to get it ready for the wild out doors! Ok, the truth is, mostly Jim's been working on it. :) But, when he told me that he had to replace the large piece of wood that extends out over the cab of the truck, I had a vision! Jim set the wooden panels up for me on saw horses so that I could paint a mural on them. Since our camper is called the "Hawk" and we had a hawk in residence last summer, I decided to paint a hawk from the perspective of looking up in the air at him. So, here's a pic of the hawk up in the sky.

We also enjoy going to Santa Cruz to see the butterflies, so I figured, we needed some of those, too.

Well, I've been working hard on the book. If you've never tried it, let me tell you, doing everything yourself is really hard!!! My wonderful mother did a lot of the editing, other than that, it's been me. Writing, formatting, laying out the cover! Yikes! So, to give myself something fun for a break I created these litte birdies and made them a home. I hope you enjoy them, too. Here's a pic of them on a tea saucer, just to give you an idea of their size.

On Wednesday, I met with the gentleman who is writing the forward for the book. Well, I must say, I was blown away! Dr. John Schroeder wrote lovely things about the book like, "Her book provides a transformational tool that works with one's conscious and subconscious mind. Walk In Your Own Footsteps provides multidimensional recipes for healing and self growth." When John delivers his final version of the foreword, the book will be ready to print and distribute as an ebook!

The creative process is so exciting. I tend to think that I'm limited by my desire to see the end of a project quickly. I can honestly tell you that spending 9 years on a project (intermittedly) can be just as rewarding when you finally see the light at the end of the tunnel (NO, it's not a train! I hope)

In many ways I know that this is not the end of the book experience, it is just the closing of the first part. Soon, I'll be working on promoting it! :)

Faerie houses by Sally J. Smith

I was at Borders today, looking at the new calendars, and found the most wonderful artist! Her name is Sally J. Smith. She's absolutely wonderful! She creates these darling little houses in the woods near her home, then photographs them. I have had a spot in my own garden that I was going to put a little gnome home.. But I'm so inspired!! Maybe not faeries, but perhaps a home in my garden for a Hobbit. I've always loved the idea of them. If you havent seen her work, google her and enjoy! If you're an old fan, you're lucky!

Taking inspiration from the painting I titled, "Happy, Joyous, and Free" the illustrations in my book all have the same, free form. Here I've pained one that just looks so happy! I'm going to scan it and shrink down and make it into a pendant. I love the way it seems to be dancing with the flower.

Using stained glass, I've been making little pendants... (gotta put some pics up!) So, today I'm going to start doing little color illustrations to go along with my book "Walk In Your Own Footsteps" I love the happy painting featured to the right of my blog and the illustrations from the book are versions of that image in different poses and situations.

Since I am excited about sharing my book with as many people as I can, I contacted a few of my writing heros in hopes that I may get comments and feedback from those who have gone before me and been helpful to so many.

So, today, I heard from don Miguel Ruiz's staff. He has written many books and "The four agreements" really helped to shape my ability to love people just as they are. Well, I was told in a lovely email that don Miguel will read my manuscript and I am so pleased!

Major progress on the book!!

This has been an amazing week for my forthcoming book, "Walk in your own footsteps." My good friend, and councellor, Dr. John Schroeder, has agreed to write a foreword. Artist, Karen Wall Garrison, is working on the logo. And, graphic artist Aaron Roseli is going to do the cover lay-out. Of course, Marty Wofford is working on the final edits right now!

It's really coming together and I'm so excited!!! Depending on everyone's schedules, I could be looking at weeks till publish at this point!

Here's the picture I'm gonna use for the cover. It's special because I took it on an outing with Jim. We always have so much fun on our trips!

I am inspired by the Day of the Dead art from Mexico. I did this "altared" book last October and it continues to be a favorite. The book is a thrift store find, the crochet is also rescued from a local thrift store. The tiny birds are from a sand dollar that I found cracked so I opened it to let the little birdies out. I hand sculped and painted the sculls and offerings of food and flowers. The pictures are from a 1800's dictionary set and I liberated them so that they can me honored for all time.

With only 10 questions left to write and edits to work through, I feel the book's completion is close at hand. I'm so excited and uplifted by the positive feedback I've received about it so far. I am hopeful that the book will help many people! Woo hoo! Life is good.

Writing, painting, sewing, oh my!

I've been putting all my creative energy into finishing my book, "Walk in your own footsteps." Any spare time I have has been either creating the illustrations, or writing. I'm so excited because the finish line is in sight.

And, wouldn't you know it, I'm feeling the pull to paint and sew. I think I'll start collecting little girls dresses made of cotton fabric to make a soft cuddly quilt. Doesn't that sound nice? A sweet quilt from well-loved dresses? I can't wait.

Oh and there's the painting that's been simmering on the back burner of my mind. We took a trip to the coast and I saw the most beautiful field of flowers with a lighthouse at the far end perched on a perfect cliff. I took pictures and am going to do a painting to hang up in our bedroom. I also plan to do a series of flowers for the wall leading up the stairs.

Let's not forget the art pieces I've been doing using stained glass and vintage post cards. And... the pendants, jewelry, sculptures... Oh, and we're looking for a travel trailer to take trips and I'm so excited about decorating that, too.

So, it's wonderful to be blessed with a creative spirit, but having crafty ADD can make it so hard to complete anything.

Tomorrow, I swear, I'll work on the book. And, maybe, swing by the thrift shop to check out the little girl dresses. Fall will come and I'll be glad to have a quilt to work on. :)

On the road again....

Just as my youngest son returns from his epic trip (actually a cruise) to Alaska, Jim and I are off to the coast for a restful weekend! As always, I'll be on the hunt for wonderful things to add to my ever-growing collections of creations. Just how much stock should I have before I launch my ETSY store? Hmmm... I guess more than I have because I don't feel ready yet.

The best part is I keep getting new ideas and the thrill of creative energy is amazing!

Just back from a successful trip to the coast

My sweetie and I ventured to the Northern California coast to collect photographs for the pendants we make together this week. We found many lovely flowers to capture in a flower test garden in Gilroy, CA. Then we drove up the coast where we took some gorgeous photos of the ocean. One picture of a lighthouse I'm planning to paint for our room. As photographed, the lighthouse is just beyond a feild of yellow flowers. Many wildflowers are in bloom right now adding a colorful accent to the already rich colors of the beaches and cliffs. And, of course, a little romance adds to the fun of everything! I'll get some photos on my facebook page soon.

I scored a wonderful set of tools and supplies for making stained glass! Thankfully, a gentleman in El Dorado decided to let go of his stained glass supplies and quite a bit of glass, too. Soon I'll have specialty charms and peices to offer in my ETSY store. With a 2 year goal in mind, I hope to be making half my income from my art. Art has long been my love, passion, and fun! I look forward ot sharing that sense of whimsy.
